Twitter API v1.1 Rolled Out Amidst Controversies

Twitter has finally released v1.1 of its API and has updated the document with "Developer Rules of the Road" to reflect the changes.

The new set of rules and directives have created uproar in the developers' communities of late, especially over the speculative 100,000 user limit that has been placed on third-party Twitter clients. While it was previously revealed that developers will have six months to abide by the new API requirements, it is not yet clear what will happen to those who refuse to agree with the terms.

The official Twitter page stated that users will "notice that the documentation on dev.twitter.com reflects the latest changes and methods available in API v1.1. To better distinguish whether you're viewing docs for version 1 or version 1.1, at the top of each endpoint document, there are new blue pills that indicate the version. Each endpoint's resource information box will also indicate the method's API version, its rate limit per window, and more."

Twitter, however, has also clarified the user limit by stating that it only applies to clients that "replicate the core Twitter experience." This clarification refers to clients (such as Tweetbot), who have already taken or will be taking steps to evade the effects of the new limitations.
