'The Vampire Diaries' Season 8 Spoilers, News And Updates: Elena And Caroline Fight Over Stefan? Old Rivalry Resumes?

With the impending return of "The Vampire Diaries" for its 8th and final season, rumors are rife that Nina Dobrev will return as Elena Gilbert. Will this pose a threat to Stefan and Caroline's relationship? Will Elena and Caroline's old rivalry resumes?

Since the day it was announced that Dobrev might be making a comeback on "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8, avid fans of the show have been on the edge of their seats, anticipating the confirmation from Dobrev herself. To date, the actress still hasn't confirmed or denied the supposed return. However, the actress and former co-star/ex-boyfriend Ian Somerhalder have allegedly expressed their unwillingness to work together again. There were even reports claiming that Somerhalder's marriage to actress Nikki Reed was greatly affected by the rumored comeback.

With that, many speculate that Dobrev might reprise her role as of Elena Gilbert and will rekindle her flame with Stefan. This speculation was even fuelled when actor/director Paul Wesley, who portrays Stefan, posted a photo on Instagram during one of their shoots, with a girl in the background that strongly resembles Dobrev. This made fans think that a Stefan-Elena reunion might take place soon. After all, Elena and Stefan were the first to fall in love in "The Vampire Diaries."

However, if Elena reunites with Stefan in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8, many fans of "Steroline" (Stefan and Caroline) might be disappointed. It can be recalled that executive producer Julie Plec revealed that Stefan and Caroline are "as strong as can be, considering what's going on. They're finding comfort and safety in each other." If Dobrev did return as Elena and go after Stefan, the old rivalry between her and Caroline is expected to resume. Who will end up winning this time?

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 returns on The CW on Oct. 21, Friday, at 8 p.m. EDT.
