The newest addition to Facebook - the Promote button - is now live on the social networking site. The company has included this chargeable option for users to promote personal posts at the top of friends' News Feeds.
Originally known as "highlight," Facebook is now calling this option Promote, which is what it also calls an advertising feature for business and fan pages. Users will now see a Promote button next to Like and Comment on a user's Facebook posts.
After clicking Promote, users will be taken through a payment process. Although, initially, prices ranged from free to $2, several users have reported that they have been prompted to pay more (more than $6). Users also have the option to pay via PayPal, a credit card, or money they have saved from paying for virtual goods.
Once done, the promoted post will appear at the top of friends' News Feeds with an indication that the user has already paid for it to be placed there.
"We are expanding a test that started last May that enables people to pay to promote a status update so that more friends may see it in their news feed," a Facebook spokesperson told The Next Web. "We're constantly testing new features across the site. This particular test is simply to gauge people's interest in this method of sharing with their friends."
However, it is important to note that promoted page posts can be managed by the Page admin who created them and any other admin with general user permission on the user's ads account. What this means is that when a user is giving someone general user access to his or her ads account, he/she is giving them the ability to create, edit, and delete ads and campaigns; however, although they can see it, they can't change billing, and access all reports.
As far as un-promoting a post is concerned, the user can do that from the personal account. However, currently, it's not possible to do that and if the user has already promoted something by mistake or later changes his or her mind about wanting more people to see the post, they can delete it and post again without promoting it.
To do that, a user needs to head over to the specific post and click on the pencil icon, and delete it from there.
