Apple released its eagerly anticipated iOS 6 mobile platform alongside the next-generation iPhone. The new OS boasts of more than 200 new features, which include the new Maps app, Facebook integration, Passbook, improved Siri, revamped calling system, and support for Baidu search in addition to other features.
Now, with the arrival of the platform, jailbreak fans are also looking forward to get their hands on the latest jailbreak to experience the same kind of freedom they have so far enjoyed with the previous jailbroken versions of the iOS.
Fans are in for some good news as the iPhone Dev-Team's popular jailbreak tool Redsn0w now works on the new iOS 6 release. Moreover, it can perform a tethered iOS 6 jailbreak on A4-based iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch (4th-gen).
However, before getting started with the process, users ought to remember that this is a tethered jailbreak that works only on abov- mentioned devices. Currently, no untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 is available. Additionally, devices such as iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad 3, and iPod touch 5th-gen are not supported. Moreover, since no jailbreak tool to install Cydia is available, a manual process needs to be followed.
It is advisable that users back up the device before jailbreaking. iTechPost will not be held responsible for any kind of damage and interested users go forward at their own risk.
The steps to perform a tethered jailbreak using Redsnow are as follows.
Step 1: Download iOS 6 and update device to this latest version. Check here for instructions.
Step 2: Once iOS 6 is installed, connect the device to the computer and place it in DFU mode.
Step 3: Download RedSn0w 0.9.13dev4 (Windows / Mac), extract the contents from the compressed file and save it on the PC or Mac. (the download link - RedSn0w 0.9.13dev4: Mac, Windows).
Step 4: Run Redsn0w (in administrator mode if using a PC). OS X Mountain Lion users will need to start Redsn0w by "Ctrl-Click" on the icon and then selecting "Open" from the new menu.
Step 5: Now click "Extras > Select IPSW", and select the iOS 6 firmware file. It should successfully identify the firmware.
Step 6: Click "Back" and then click "Jailbreak". A dialog box that says "preparing jailbreak data" will appear, followed by a page with a few options. See to it that "Install SSH" is selected, and then click "Next."
Step 7: Once the jailbreak process is completed, the device will go back to the Lock screen. Place the device into DFU mode once again.
Step 8: Click "Back" and then "Just boot". A pineapple logo will appear on the device. This is to indicate a tethered boot. Again when back on the Lock screen, close Redsn0w.
How to Install Cydia ?
Before the steps are followed, users need to know that the process that has been provided to install Cydia is done using Terminal on Mac. However, same commands can be used on Windows using a SSH program (like WinSCP).
Step 1: On the device, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > and click the arrow next to the connected Wi-Fi router. Remember to note down the IP address.
Step 2: Make sure that the computer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and open the Terminal app.
Step 3: In the terminal, type ssh root@
Step 4: After a few seconds, it will prompt the user to enter the root password. The password is alpine.
Step 5: Once completed, type the following: wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh https://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh
Step 6: After some scrolling prompts, the device should reboot and Cydia will be installed.
