Verizon iPhone 5 Updated – Gets Rid Of Carrier Data Usage When Connected To Wi-Fi

U.S.-based carrier Verizon Wireless has started a pushing out a new update for users who own the carrier's version of the latest iPhone 5. The new update is said to resolve issues that saw users lose out on a large amount of data from Verizon.

According to reports, while connected to a Wi-Fi network, the iPhone 5 was frequently using Verizon's cellular data. This usage of the network operator-provided data created a lot of furore and experts opined was illogical, as the smartphone was already connected to a separate Wi-Fi network and would use that to carry out any web-related activities.

At this juncture, it is unclear how much data was leaked and if Verizon would look into the matter and resolve the issue, including a refund announcement for affected customers. The company is yet to comment on the situation.

The instructions to install the update which gets rid of the data leakage issue are as follows:

Step 1: Tap Settings - General - About.

Step 2: Users will see an alert on the screen for Carrier Settings Update. The alert will ask users to install new settings by tapping on OK. Next, users will need to press and hold the power button, drag the slider, and finally restart. (Wait for the alert to appear). Users need to tap OK to install the update.

Step 3: Now hold the Sleep/Wake button down until "slide to power off" alert is shown on the screen.

Step 4: Accordingly, slide to power off.

Step 5: After the device powers off, hold the Sleep/Wake button to turn the device on.

It is important to remember that to finish the installation of the update, the iPhone 5 must be turned off and then switched on again. Later, after the device restarts, users need to tap Settings - General - About, and then scroll down to the Carrier section and confirm that the updated "Verizon 13.1" is displayed.

The new update has arrived less than two weeks after the release of iOS 6, and at a time when Apple is acknowledging and fixing the related Wi-Fi bugs. Currently two major Wi-Fi threads in the Apple Support Communities are available, and the two threads combined have spread to more than 150 pages. Users can access the first and second support threads for additional help.
