Rovio, it seems, wants to make the most out of the "Angry Birds" franchise that has made quite a name for itself after its first release for Apple's iOS in December 2009. Now, per reports, Rovio Entertainment and Lucasfilm have announced a potential partnership in bringing an entirely new Angry Birds series - "Angry Birds Star Wars."
The game is set for a worldwide launch on Nov. 8, and is set to combine all the fun and excitement of the classic "Angry Birds" and "Angry Birds Space" with the characters, stories and settings of the epic space fantasy, "Star Wars."
"This is the best Angry Birds game we've ever done. It's the best parts of Angry Birds with all new cutting-edge gameplay set in a galaxy far, far away," said Peter Vesterbacka, the Mighty Eagle and CMO of Rovio. "As a big Star Wars fan myself, I'm really excited about this new universe. The Force is definitely strong with this one."
Additionally, from the deserts of Tatooine to the depths of the Death Star, the game and its merchandize will be featuring the "Angry Birds" characters starring as the legendary heroes of the beloved and the popular saga.
Moreover, the company, this fall, will also unveil a massive retail launch for "Angry Birds Star Wars." Merchandise will include from Halloween costumes and apparel to action figures and collectible plush toys that will be available at select retailers, starting Oct. 28.
"Both Star Wars and Angry Birds share the instant and irresistible appeal of hands-on fun," said Colum Slevin, Vice President, Head of Studio Operations for Lucasfilm Ltd. "People seem to instinctively know what to do when handed a lightsaber or a bird in a slingshot, so this is a natural combination."
The information about the new installment in the "Angry Birds" franchise arrived after it was revealed that a special version of the game, called "Angry Birds Magic," will be developed exclusively for Nokia's NFC-enabled Symbian and Harmattan devices.
"Angry Birds Magic" is said to include functionality that will unlock game levels upon contact with another NFC-enabled phone running the game. Previously, a free version of "Angry Birds Magic" came preinstalled with all NFC Symbian devices sold in 2011, starting with the Nokia C7.
The previous hit from Rovio - "Angry Birds Space" - was reported to have been downloaded a total of 100 million times since launching on iOS, Android, PC and Mac.
"Angry Birds Star Wars," on launch, will be available on iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone, and Windows 8.
