Onavo Count Free Usage Tracker For iOS Finds Data-Hungry Apps

Onavo, the developer behind popular data compression apps for Android and iOS, has just launched a new iOS app to break down apps' data usage.

Onavo has built a good reputation for optimizing mobile data, whether by helping users save money or keeping them informed about what's sapping their monthly data allowance.

The Onavo Count app has been available for Android for a while now, it only became available for iOS users on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

While other data counter apps are available to show overall data usage, Onavo claims that its app is the first one to break down bandwidth reporting by app. Onavo Count provides users with a comprehensive list of exactly how much data each individual app is using, as well as charts that show changes over time.

The app shows a 30-day history of how apps use cellular data, aiming to help users discover data-sapping apps that could kill the monthly bandwidth limit. Opening the app will display a clear breakdown of app data usage for the past month. Meanwhile, clicking specific apps will offer a weekly measure of data usage as well.

Onavo Count also allows users to share their results from any of the screens across Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, and text message if they want to warn or tip friends about a specific app's data usage.

According to Onavo, the Onavo Count app uses cloud-based technologies, which makes it the only app data consumption monitor that prevents battery drainage.

In addition, the app usage tracker also seamlessly integrates with Onavo Extend, the company's popular data shrinking app launched back in 2011 at The Next Web Conference. This integration will show users how much cellular data Extend has saved for each app.

On the other hand, Onavo Count for iOS does not have all the bells and whistles of its Android counterpart. The homescreen widgets are the most notable absence, as they offered real-time updates on data usage. Onavo, however, is not to blame for the limitations imposed by the operating system.

The Onavo Count app is free for both Android and iOS, and can is available for download from the Google Play Store or the iTunes App Store, respectively.
