The Acer Iconia Tab A110, the budget-friendly quad-core rival of the Google Nexus 7 tablet, has been made available for purchase in the U.S. and Canada.
The Iconia Tab A110 comes with a $230 price tag, and comes preloaded with the Android Jelly Bean mobile operating system. Touted by many as the Nexus 7 killer, the A110 is actually similar to Google's offering, though it adds some extra features.
Acer's tablet packs a 1.2 Nvidia Tegra 3 processor under the hood, a 12-core GeForce GPU, and 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM. The A110 sports a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels, lower than the Nexus 7's 1,280 x 800 resolution. On the other hand, the Acer Iconia Tab A110 features micro HDMI out, and also comes with a micro SD card slot allowing users to expand the 8GB of internal storage. It does not, however, support Near-Field Communication (NFC).
When it comes to connectivity options, the Acer Iconia Tab A110 features Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS, Bluetooth, and various ports including micro USB 2.0 and micro HDMI. The tablet also packs a 3,420mAh Li-Ion polymer battery that promises to deliver up to 7.5 hours of activity.
Asus aimed to make its tablet extremely portable, so the Iconia Tab A110 weighs roughly 0.85 pounds and measures 0.85 x 5.0 x 0.4 inches. The 7-inch Active Matrix TFT LCD touch panel delivers the aforementioned WSVGA resolution with an aspect ratio of 128:75.
In an increasingly competitive tablet market, the A110 tablet is expected to go head-to-head with Google's Nexus 7 slate. While for some the $230 price tag of the 8GB Iconia Tab A110 seems a bit much compared to the $250 price of the 32GB Nexus 7, for others HDMI out and expandable storage make Acer's offering quite exciting.
The Taiwanese consumer electronics giant is now selling its Acer Iconia Tab A110 online via the Acer store or through Amazon. The tablet is also available at BestBuy, but for some reason it retails for a slightly higher price - $250 instead of $230. Meanwhile, potential buyers in Canada can get the quad-core tablet from Future Shop for $199.99, $29 less than the previously disclosed retail price.
