Amazon Selling Fake Products - Apple Complains

Apple files a complaint against a New Jersey company on Monday. The complaint says that Amazon is selling counterfeit chargers and cables for its product, yet they are claiming that it's an original Apple product.

According to CNBC, the products on Amazon.com are labeled as genuine Apple produce. Until they found out that 90 percent of them are counterfeit.

The revelation comes in a federal lawsuit filed by Apple against Amazon on Monday over what Apple says are counterfeit chargers and cables for its products that were sold on Amazon.

In the lawsuit, Apple says Mobile Star imprinted Apple logos on products that pose a significant risk of an emergency such as overheating, fire and electrical shock. It says that the chargers and cables were being sold on Amazon as genuine Apple products.

Apple says it purchased the products on Amazon and later told the online retailer that they were fake. Amazon then identified Mobile Star as the source of the fake products.

Fire Risk

"Unlike genuine Apple products, they are not subjected to industry-standard consumer safety testing and are poorly constructed with inferior or missing components, flawed design, and inadequate electrical insulation," Apple representative said.

"These counterfeits have the potential to overheat, catch fire and deliver a deadly shock to consumers while in normal use."

The company also said that customers might be fooled into believing that the products were safe to use because Amazon is one of the US's most trustworthy companies that sales different products online and ships worldwide.

"Consumers, relying on Amazon.com's reputation, have no reason to suspect the power products they purchased... are anything but genuine."

According to BBC News, a blogger who has previously highlighted what he calls "Amazon's fraudulent seller problem" suggested Apple should be more aggressive in its effort to tackle the issue.

"I can certainly see why Apple is suing Mobile Star," wrote John Gruber.

"But why not sue Amazon too?

"This is shameful. I've known for a while never to trust anything merely 'fulfilled by Amazon', but I'm actually surprised that even the 'Apple' branded chargers... are dangerous counterfeits as well."
