Sony is set make a mark in the iOS universe via a brand new reader app in the already crowded Apple App Store. Per reports, Sony has just announced the availability of its entirely new Reader iOS app that will now compete with the other iBooks solution in the market.
Like others in the same department, Sony Reader will let users log in with their Sony credentials and download all of their purchased books to their iOS devices. Although the app’s functionality doesn’t really distinguish from the other such reader apps in the App Store, it could be considered as a major market move on the part of Sony in its aim to get its services on as many devices as possible.
“Sony Reader Store has officially launched Reader for iOS, a free application that allows customers to access their library on their compatible Apple devices. The Reader for iOS app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices with an iOS of 3.0 or later, and an optimized version is available for iPhone 5,” the official Sony Blog states.
In order to use Reader for iOS, as mentioned earlier, users will just need download the app from the Apple App Store to their Apple device, enter the Reader Store credentials and then download content from the library to read, wherever and whenever.
However, this is not all. The Blog also states that there is more to offer than just reading self-downloaded books on iOS devices, and according to the company, for a limited time “when you download the iOS app, you will also receive an exclusive short adventure story titled “Trouble on Reserve” from the awesome, celebrated urban fantasy author, and one of Reader Store’s most popular authors, Kim Harrison’s bestselling Hollows series. The short story will automatically download to the customer’s library on the iOS app.”
The new Reader app promises to deliver a natural, book-like reading experience, access to the Reader library to read new purchases and old favorites, option of day and night reading mode, intuitive navigation that makes the app easier to handle, personalized collections and library organization, and more.
As of now, Reader is already available for Android, alongside Sony's Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited apps. Although it would be a surprise if the app gained popularity in the market among all other similar such apps, it could be useful for those using one of Sony's E Ink readers who also want to read on their iPhone.
However, note that the app requires separate account registration.
