The Android updates from Samsung for U.S.-based customers have always arrived late, and while the Sprint-based Galaxy S3 users are already enjoying the new Android 4.1 OS build, Verizon subscribers are still waiting to get their hands on the upgraded OS. However, all of that could now change as per reports, a new Jelly Bean ROM has emerged for Verizon-based S3.
This news will be welcomed by Verizon subscribers who aren’t really lucky when compared to their Sprint-based counterparts, as far as an operating system upgradation is concerned. Sprint customers got the update last month and the company became the first among major carriers in the U.S. to boast the availability of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for their users.
However, the new ROM is pre-rooted and (de)odexed and is meant for users who are eager to ignore all the warnings issued by the device before a ROM is installed and love to go deep into their devices.
For those who are wondering as to what odex or deodex means, an .ODEX file is an optimized Dalvik executable file, similar to an .EXE in windows.
The .ODEX is compressed to save space, and contains bits and pieces of its application that are optimized before Android boots. This is meant to help speed up the boot process while pre-loading parts of the application.
A DEODEX file, on the contrary, is not a file extension like .ODEX is. Rather, apps that are DEODEXed are assembled in such a way that they aren’t “pre-optimized” and the bits that would have normally gone into a separate .ODEX file are now put into classes.dex files and kept inside the .APK (Android Package). This classification is meant to aid easy modification and theming.
The new leaked ROM is for Android 4.1.1 with build JRO3L.I535VRBLJ1 and is dated Oct. 24. As reported by the XDA Developers, this is set to be the final build of the ROM before an official upgrade takes place. The new ROM’s features include odex or deodex, zip alignment, support for init.d, adb as root, and more.
“Due to the multiple requests, after several days of work and various testing, I have created a working guide for public use limited to only a few steps. This is a guide that will help you flash a 99% stock factory image for the official Jelly Bean leaks for Verizon Galaxy S III overwriting every partition on the device to stock. The ONLY major change I have made is for your convenience it keeps all your data/apps/settings and internal storage partition in tact,” the Developer site states.
Moreover, the new mod also allows flashing ClockworkMod or TWRP Recovery, adds Superuser/SU (roots the ROM), and unlocks the bootloader.
