In the celebration lecture for the opening of the new Leverhulme Centre of the Future of Intelligence, Stephen Hawking said that the creation of A.I. (artificial intelligence) is either the best or worst thing to happen to humanity. The lecture is supposed to give chances for several of the best minds in the field of science provide answers about the future robots and A.I.
"We spend a great deal of time studying history, which, let’s face it, is mostly the history of stupidity. But despite all our time consumed looking back at past errors, we seem to make same mistakes over and over again.So it's a welcome change that people are studying instead the future of intelligence," the theoretical physicist explained.
This is not the first time Hawking has addressed the emergence of A.I. Just last year, he joined Elon Musk and hundreds of other researchers in writing and signing an open letter questioning the governments to ban self-governing weapons that might one day be able to turn against humans.
"The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," Hawking also said a few months back. In his recent Wednesday's lecture, he confessed that he was still worried about “powerful autonomous weapons” and “new ways for the few to oppress the many“, which come with A.I.
He also said that if we can think about addressing the issues now, the technology has the potential to do good. "We cannot predict what we might achieve when our own minds are amplified by AI," he added.
Elon Musk, PayPal, SpaceX and SolarCity founder, told the Recode Code Conference attendees that typical human intelligence is weak and will require a "neural lace" brain implant to keep up A.I. Now that Google is already forming A.I. software, Musk said that unless we, as humans, must ditch stupidity and increase our intelligence drastically, we may become the "house pets" of A.I. in the future.
Elon also said that he agrees with Stephen Hawking who believes that history is chronicle of human stupidity. Musk even tweeted a rather interesting statement.
