LG Optimus G2 Rumored To Debut In May With 5-Inch 1080p Display

Just a couple of months since LG officially launched its flagship Optimus G smartphone, rumors are already swirling and heralding a more powerful successor.

A new report on Monday, Nov. 26, claimed that "sources in the industry" heard that an LG Optimus G successor, referred to as the Optimus G2, is on its way.

According to Korea's MK Business News, LG is not only working on an Optimus G follow-up, but the handset could launch as early as May 2013. The report claims that LG Electronics is already working with its subsidiaries, including LG Display and LG Innotek, and is set to unveil the LG Optimus G2 six months ahead of schedule.

It's difficult to assess at this point just how accurate the rumored spec sheet is, but MK's report paints an impressive picture. The new handset will reportedly sport a 5-inch, 1080p display.

Experts believe the new smartphone will launch six months early in a bid to go head-to-head with the expected release of Samsung's next flagship smartphone, unofficially dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S4. While both LG and Samsung were expected to release 1080p smartphones i9n the first half of 2013, the G2 seems to have plenty more to offer besides the sizzling display.

Should the report prove to be accurate, the LG Optimus G2 will pack an unspecified 2GHz Qualcomm chipset under the hood. The original Optimus G sports a beefy Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, which means that its successor has some big shoes to fill. The report, however, makes no mention of battery performance, and battery can make or break a smartphone like this.

The smartphone scene is becoming increasingly competitive, and LG has some big contenders to rival. HTC has released its 5-inch 1080p Droid DNA powerhouse, and Sony and Samsung are expected to unveil their 1080p offerings soon enough.

"The Optimus G2's release date is likely to coincide with that of Samsung electronics, who intends to equip its new smartphone with full HD, active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display. The two models are expected to invite a fiercer competition between the two companies," reported MK Business News.

While LG has never truly been considered a top contender, the Nexus 4 and Optimus G handsets have boosted the company's image and raised expectations.
