Camaro ZL1 Sets New Lap Record At The Ring, Beats Koenigsegg Hypercar

A huge variety of cars have been trying to conquer Nürburgring for years. From Hondas to Ferraris, different drivers test their cars limit in this more than 28-km course. In this latest report, the Camaro ZL1 runs the track and set a new lap time.

The 2017 Camaro ZL1 came with a supercharged V8 engine that packs 650bhp and 650 lb-ft of torque. This Chevy also features special magnetic suspensions, vast brakes, a proper aero kit and sticky tires. Most of these features are on stock factory form so it is really surprising that an unmodified car can set a decent lap record on the 'Ring.

Compared to its predecessor, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, has 70 more horsepower, 94 additional lb-ft of torque and is lighter by around 200 lbs. It is no surprise that this version of the Camaro will be faster than its previous model, what is really impressive, however, is the 12 seconds the 2017 version cut off from the 2016 Camaro.

The only aftermarket parts included when they ran the track was a bucket seat, data-logging equipment, and a roll-hoop. According to Top Gear, the car is basically a standard unmodified ZL1 spec.

The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro finished the lap with a record-setting seven minutes and 29.6 seconds, which bested the seven minutes 33.55 seconds record of hypercar Koenigsegg. Only the automatic transmission in "Track" mode was used during the run. The driver also did not need to choose gears manually throughout the run and just left Chevrolet's automatic transmission do all the work, thus being able to focus purely in steering and foot control.

The same specs is expected to be found on all 2017 Camaro ZL1 cars so any new owner has the potential to run the ring with a close enough, or maybe, better lap time than the record that was just set.
