Although they just recently debuted, the inception of the new group was announced as early as 2012 along with teasers of possible members. The BLACKPINK members have since engaged in different individual activities including endorsements and television appearances. The final members and name of the group were announced on June 29.

BLACKPINK also broke the record for the fastest girl group to win in a music program after debut, with their win in "Inkigayo" after roughly 14 days. Together with another rookie girl group TWICE, BLACKPINK is already being compared to Korea's most successful girl groups, 2NE1 and Girls' Generation.
