Samsung Display will unveil a 5.5-inch flexible screen at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. The screen, which in future is likely to wind up in smartphones, features a high-definition resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels, reveals a CNET report.
"Attendees (at the CES) will get to see a 5.5-inch flexible screen intended for smartphone use, with a 1,280 x 720-pixel HD resolution and a 267 pixel density. In addition, the team will also show off a television-size 55-inch screen," CNET reported citing representatives of the Samsung's display manufacturing division. Speculations were rife that its flagship Galaxy S4 will have an unbreakable display and now as the rumours are finally confirmed, the highly-anticipated smartphone screen is most likely to be flexible screen as well.
The sources said the flexible display offers a great deal of design freedom and though its demo screens curve without rending, they can still not be rolled up. The sources said the company's display division will also develop the touch panel as well as the cover lens for this bendable screen.
The South Korean technology giant has been developing curving screens for some time. The company showed off smaller display demos such as the 4.5-inch WVGA screen with about a 200 pixel density at the CES last year.
According to rumors doing the rounds in the tech world, Samsung has been secretly working on a new version of its Galaxy handset that uses the radical, resilient new technology. Some tech analysts and blogs noted that the work is codenamed "Project J" after mobile division chief JK Shin and that the development of the new Galaxy S IV could be released as early as April. However, the unbreakable, flexible screen will undoubtedly be a big selling point for the Galaxy in its battle against Apple iPhone to lead the $200billion plus smartphone market.
