BMW Recalling 154,000 Due To Possible Engine Stalling

BMW is recalling more than 154,000 vehicles due to an issue with the fuel pump. The pump problem may cause the engine to stall.

According to CNET, a total of 138,188 cars and crossovers are involved in the latest recall. Reuters pegged the number at 154,472 but added that the recall also covered Canada.

The recalled BMW vehicles were model years 2007 to 2012.

The wiring to the fuel pumps is the reason for the recall. BMW says the wiring may not be properly crimped which may cause them to loosen. If the wiring gets loose, there is the risk of the wire causing the connector to melt. This, in turn, may cause fuel to leak. When that happens, the engine may stall. The fact that fuel may leak also enhances the risk of fire.

The company insists that there have been no reported accidents yet connected to the fuel pump issue.

The affected BMW models are:

  • 2007-2011 X5 3.0si, 4.8i, xDrive30i, xDrive35i, xDrive48i, xDrive50i, X5 M
  • 2008-2011 X6 xDrive35i, xDrive50i, X6 M
  • 2010-2011 X6 ActiveHybrid
  • 2010-2011 535i Gran Turismo/xDrive GT, 550i Gran Turismo/xDrive GT
  • 2011-2012 528i, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i, 550i xDrive
  • 2012 535i ActiveHybrid, 640i Convertible, 650i Convertible, 650i xDrive Convertible, 650i Coupe, 650i Coupe xDrive

The recalled models can be brought to dealerships where the whole fuel pump module will be replaced for free. The recall starts on December 5 this year.

BMW recalled 53,000 X3s in China back in 2015 because of wiring issues. The company has also recalled vehicles in Japan and South Korea since 2014 for the same reason. Six years ago, a faulty fuel pump also forced the German company to recall 150,000 vehicles.

Other car manufacturers have also dealt with recalls in recent months. The biggest one so far involves 5.8 million cars fitted with airbags that have Takata inflators. The defective airbags have claimed 16 lives so far. Another recent recall order involves 63,000 sedans with sunroofs that may fly off.
