Install Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean on Major US Variants of Samsung Galaxy S3 Using Custom ROM CyanogenMod10.1 [Extensive How-To Tutorial]

The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) team began rolling out CyanogenMod10.1, aka CM10.1 last month for a bunch of Samsung devices including Galaxy Note 2 (N7100) and the major U.S. variants of Galaxy S3. CM10.1, the latest version of one of the popular custom ROMs available for various Android devices, is based on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean (Build: JOP40D).

CyanogenMod, designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device, is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. CyanogenMod offers features that you won't find in the official firmware made available by vendors of the supported devices. Some of the significant Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean features include gesture typing, lock-screen widget, multi-user support, new daydream feature, new quick settings option, photo sphere, new camera app, miracast display and improved Google Now, among others.

The below tutorial includes an extensive detailing on "how to install CM10.1 Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean on various U.S. variants of Samsung Galaxy S3, including carriers like Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, US Cellular and Cricket." It should be noted that CM10.1 ROM is in the nightly phase now, so there could be flaws. These issues are expected to be fixed in a short while as development progresses.

Before you go ahead with installation, here are the prerequisites that you need to be aware of:

- Have a proper backup of your data.

- The device should have at least 80 percent of battery power.

- USB driver must be installed for Samsung Galaxy S3 in your PC. [download here]

- USB Debugging must be enabled.

- Backup your EFS Folder.

- Your device should be rooted and should have ClockworkMod Recovery Installed.

- Flashing this ROM on your Galaxy S3 will increase your binary counter.

- Make sure you do not skip Nandroid backup, NEVER, as it's very helpful if this custom ROM doesn't work the way you wanted.
