"Ajin: Demi-Human" is confirmed for a live-action film adaptation scheduled for next year. Takeru Sato will play the role of its protagoninst, Kei Nagai. The production is also bringing in the "Rurouni Kenshin" stunt team for the superhuman action scenes involving the invisible black matters.
The original story of "Ajin: Demi-human" features Kei as a high school student who discovered he is an Ajin, an immortal being feared by humans, after getting involved in a car accident. He is pursued by the government to be and his run from humankind began. According to Crunchyroll, Kei will be portrayed as a medical intern to fit Satoh's real age of 27.
Sato landed his first lead role in "Kamen Rider Den-O" in 2007. He has since been involved in many live-action adaptations of famous anime series including "Rookies" in 2008-2009, "BECK" in 2010, "Rurouni Kenshin" in 2012-2014 and "Bakuman" in 2015.
Sato said he read "Ajin: Demi-Human" manga two years ago, and as a reader himself, he really enjoyed the story and wanted to make it into a film. Katsuyuki Motohiro, the brain behind "Odoru Daisousasen" ("Bayside Shakedown") in 1997-2012 and Psycho-Pass anime series in 2012-2015, will work for the first time with Sato as director of the film
Gamon Sakurai's original "Ajin: Demi-Human" manga started in 2012 under Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine. The manga topped Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics of 2014 list and was nominated in the 18th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize "Reader Award" in 2014. It has also inspired a 3D CG film trilogy, an anime series and original anime DVD's all produced by Polygon Pictures.
The trilogy films directed by Hiroaki Ando include "Ajin: Shōdō," ("Ajin: Impulse") released in Japan on Nov. 2015, "Ajin: Shōtotsu" ("Ajin: Collision") on May 6 and "Ajin: Shōgeki" ("Ajin: Crash") on Sept. 23. On the other hand, the first season for "Ajin: Demi-Human" anime series debuted on Jan. 13 with 13 episodes while the second season premiered on Oct. 7.
