Apple iOS 6.1 Update Brings New Features

Today Apple released an over-the-air (OTA) update, the iOS 6.1, the first major update for iOS 6 since a minor bug fix, the 6.0.2, was released in December.

"iOS 6 is the world's most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history," said Philip Schiller, Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing.

The iOS 6.1 adds LTE support, the ability to purchase tickets from movie ticket hub Fadango using Siri (U.S only). Another feature on the iOS 6.1 is the added capability for iTunes Match subscribers to now download individual songs to their devices from iCloud. Carriers are rolling out their LTE networks and the iOS 6.1 support will allow users to experience ultrafast network speeds.

"iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads.", said Schiller.

Carriers from regions all over the world including Europe, the Middle East and will now offer LTE. Some of the countries named are Australia, Croatia Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. "iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world", said Schiller. The list of LTE supported regions and carriers is availables on Apple's Web site.

The iOS 6.1 update also added a new customization feature to permit users to control the way their Web activity is shared with advertisers. The feature will be visible under Settings > General > About > Advertising. The iOS 6.1 is available as a free software, compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and third and fourth generation iPads. It's also available for the iPad mini, iPad 2 and fourth and fifth generation iPod touch devices. Depending on the device, some features may not be available.

Users interested in jailbreaking will be happy to know that a development team has already jailbroken the software and was just awaiting the arrival of the update to release it. Sources say the developers and are planning to release it on Sunday.
