After introducing the new MacBooks, Apple was bombarded with criticisms for getting rid of almost all legacy ports. In response to the backlash, the company decided to cut off the prices of its USB-C adapters.
News of Apple slicing off the price of its USB-C dongle broke out a few days ago. The purpose of the temporary markdown is to allow an easier transition of MacBook Pro users to the new USB-C.
The new prices in the Apple Store:
- USB-C to USB Adapter drops from $19 to $9
- Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter drops from $49 to $29
- USB-C to Lightning Cable (1m) drops from $25 to $19
- USB-C to Lightning Cable (2m) from $35 to $29
- USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter from $69 to $49
- USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter from $69 to $49
- SanDisk Extreme Pro SD UHS-II Card USB-C Reader drops from $49 to $29
- All other third party USB-C peripherals ~25 percent off
The 2016 MacBook Pro was first announced in late October and, as expected, the new laptops were without the ports. Oddly, Apple ditched all the traditional USB ports except the headphone jack.
Apple's SVP of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, later defended the move in an interview, saying the headphone jack is still a necessity for users who have "setups with studio monitors, amps, and other pro audio gear that do not have wireless solutions".
The company also cut down the prices of its 4K and 5K LG Displays. The new Ultrafine Displays were also announced during the Oct. 27 event that introduced the controversial MacBook Pro.
From a price of $974, the 5K Display is now only $1,299.95. That's $325 less than the original price. The 4K Display's price was also cut by 25 percent. From $699.95, it is now worth $524 after slicing off $175.
The LG Ultrafine Displays were specifically designed to work with the latest MacBook Pro.
The "Special Pricing" of the LG Displays and the USB-C adapters will last until the end of the year.
