Apple CEO Criticizes OLED Display, Gushes Over Apple Store at Investor Conference

Apple CEO Tim Cook is not holding back his opinions on OLED displays, calling them "awful" on Tuesday, reports CNET.

"If you ever buy anything online and really want to know what the color is, as many people do, you should really think twice before you depend on the color from a OLED display," Cook said at an investor conference hosted by Goldman Sachs in San Francisco.

OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays are found in many of the iPhone's competitors, including Samsung's Galaxy S3.

Not surprisingly, Cook went on to describe Apple's Retina Display as a superior experience, and adding that the Apple display is twice as bright. "What Apple does is sweat every little detail. We want the best display, and I think we got it." When asked about whether Apple had plans to create a phone with a larger display, the CEO wouldn't give an answer, but did give his two cents about competition for size and specifications.

Cook stressed Apple's superior user experience, even suggesting that focusing on size and specifications in devices is proof that a company is unable to "create an amazing experience." Apple, according to Cook, is going to stay out of the race. He added that most consumers care about the experience of computing, not the raw power and specs on their PC or mobile device.

Central to that user experience is the Apple Store, which Cook described with praise lofty even for Apple, said CNET. "I'm not sure store is even the right word anymore," he said. "They've taken on a role much broader than that. They are the face of Apple for almost all of our customers." He added that the stores gave Apple (especially the iPad) a competitive advantage that its rivals couldn't replicate. "It's the best retail experience, it's an experience where you walk in and instantly realize it's for the purpose of serving, not selling."

Cook even went on to describe the public, civic good Apple's retail locations provide: "If you look at an agenda for an Apple store on any given day, you might find that there's a youth program going on. You might find a local musician entertaining people in that store. It's incredibly exciting what these stores do."
