GTA 6 Release Date, Update: 2020 Release Is More Likely To Push Through; Here's Why

For Rockstar Games, 2016 is a busy year unveiling details about much-awaited games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 6. Rockstar already provided a trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 that will release in late 2017. Given RDR 2's release date, seeing the sixth installment of Grand Theft Auto may not be in the works anytime soon. Here's what we know so far.

GTA 6 Might Release In 2020, Not 2018

Not too long ago, GTA 6's release was rumored to be earlier by 2018. But just recently, it looks like Rockstar Games is not planning to release the next Grand Theft Auto installment anytime soon until 2020. The reason is that following the pattern of previous GTA titles released by Rockstar, fans would have to wait at least five years apart.

GTA 4 was released in 2008 and it was only in 2013 when GTA 5 was released. Counting from GTA 5's release and another five years in the making, GTA 6 should have its release date by 2018. However, Rockstar announced a new game, Red Dead Redemption 2. So basically, the game development for GTA 6 would have been moved somewhere and fans, in turn, would have to wait even longer than the expected 2018 release date.

GTA 6 Setting: Foreign Country Locations?

As the rumor mills have it, speculations for Grand Theft Auto 6 are now running rampant. Some of the rumors making the rounds are that GTA 6 will be set in a foreign country like the UK because of Grand Theft Auto: London 1969. Japan is also a likely possibility given that the country is filled with gang wars and the Yakuza organization, which happens to fit GTA's theme. Some reports though that Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo may be more likely since GTA's developer is rather close to putting it up for the game. Still, Rockstar might stick to real-world locations like Chicago.

GTA 6 Rumor: Female Lead

Another rumor to be had is that GTA 6's leading role would be taken by a female. Chauvinists may cringe at the idea of a female lead but feminists would definitely find GTA 6 more fun to play with a character they can relate with. But even from before, the Grand Theft Auto franchise have been dominated by male leads since its beginning. If this part of the rumor is true, creating a female lead would be a major challenge for Rockstar Games.

GTA 6 Might Have AR Or VR Support

Another reason why GTA 6 might have a later release is that game developers might want to make the game more competitive by adding an augmented or virtual reality support. With any or both of these two, Rockstar might be able to beat GTA 5's record-breaking 800-million profit upon its release in September 2013. But this is something we still have to see in the late future.

GTA 6 Is In The Early Stages Of Production

Right now, Rockstar Games is still mum on the actual production of GTA 6. On the other hand, Leslie Benzies, the game publisher's president somewhat confirmed that they have already started working on Grand Theft Auto 6. Benzies hinted on the missions and different things characters will do in L.A. instead of New York or Miami. The story is also hinted to have a basic flow and both the map and story are worked up together.
