Google today is announcing an update for its very own G suite that includes Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides and Google Forms. The company introduced templates for those apps last year. Now, G Suite customers will be able to add their own in a category that’s separate from the standard-issue templates. It will be possible for approved customers to add customized templates for all the suites Google offers.
According to Tech Crunch, even you may not use templates much in your day-to-day G Suite life, this is a necessary feature for businesses. You don’t want to have to recreate your report or newsletter layout every time you start a new one, after all. For the most part then, the addition of template support in Google Docs is yet another example of Google trying to make its service more attractive to business users as it gets serious about the enterprise.
"With these customizable templates, your teams can focus less on formatting and more on driving impact and sharing success," G Suite product manager Brian Levee wrote in a blog post. Certain types of G Suite customers - those that subscribe to G Suite for Business and G Suite for Education editions - can only allow templates to be rolled out to all end users after they have been approved., Levee wrote.
Note that if you disabled template submissions to the old Google Drive templates gallery in the Admin console, users in your organization will not be able to see and use the new galleries when they launch. You can enable the new galleries for your users in the Admin console > Apps > G Suite > Drive and Docs > Templates. You can also configure the categories available for your organization's templates from that same section in the Admin console.
