As the year's end comes to nearing, we're taking a simple look back at some of the best games for 2016 and merit those that have moved and changed our hearts. In the annual Game Awards, the Geoff Keighley-produced event is sought to award the best of the best games for this year. Check out how Dota 2 and Wings Gaming squeezed its spot in the top nominees!
The Game Awards 2016: Best Esports Game
As expected, the competition for the Best Esports game is tighter than ever. Dota 2 has been one of the most existing top nominees in this division but apparently, there is a new rising name that is a threat to the title namely: Overwatch; Blizzard's fastest franchise to have reached 20 million subscribers. But nevertheless, we're pretty confident that Dota 2 will win this year's awards following the successful TI6 event and its ever growing community. Here is the complete list for the Best Esports Game category:
Dota 2 (Valve)
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (Valve)
League of Legends (Riot Games)
Overwatch (Blizzard Entertainment)
Street Fighter 5 (Capcom)
Just like the old times, we can never expect a great event without a good rivalry; the nemesis of Dota 2 - League of Legends is one of the top contender in the said category following the battle between two FPS titles: CS:GO and Overwatch. One of the underdogs is Capcom's Street Fighter 5 which is gaining in popularity in the East.
The Game Awards 2016: Best Esports Team
The category for the best Esports Team is heavily focused on the team's performance in this year alone. Now, if we put that into retrospect, it's safe to assume that Wings Gaming, despite its past inconsistencies, is the most formidable and successful Dota 2 team for 2016 - having six first-place finish across all of its Major and Premier tournaments including the recently concluded The International 2016; which has the largest prize pool in the history of Esports. Although Wings Gaming may be stellar with its 2016 record, its competitors are definitely a huge threat than you could imagine. Here is the complete list for the Best Esports Team category:
Wings Gaming (Dota 2)
SK Telecom T1 (League of Legends)
ROX Tigers (League of Legends)
SK Gaming
Cloud 9
SK Telecom T1 and ROX Tigers are one of the most prominent teams in League of Legends with the former, having an astounding all-time record of being the first three-time League of Legends World Championship (equivalent to Dota 2's The International) winner. SK Gaming and Cloud 9 wasn't specified due to the fact that the organization has multiple teams throughout numerous competitive Esports including Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, etc.
