Computer chip developers Tilera Corporation announced the TILE-Gx72 processor on Tuesday Feb. 19, featuring 72 64-bit cores, 100 Gps of networking input/output (I/O) and running Linux.
The TILE-Gx72 processor not only offers advanced multi-core processing, but features high performance DDR3 memory controllers. Featuring four of these controllers makes the CPU chip ideal for highly integrated computers. The controllers support up to 1TB of attached RAM and provide over 475 Gbps of bandwidth for lightning-fast processing performance.
Tilera's top of the line TILE-Gx36 processor was released less than a year ago and this time around, the TILE-Gx72 is an improvement on that build. This time around, Tilera is doubling the performance, I/O capability and core-count of the successful CPU.
"The TILE-Gx72 leverages Tilera's many innovations — including the iMesh 2-dimensional interconnect, DDCTMdistributed coherent cache, and TileDirectTMdirect-to-cache I/O — to deliver the highest compute-per-watt efficiency of any multicore processor in its class," said Tilera in a press release.
Additional technical specs of the TILE-Gx72 allow for reduced systems cost by the combination of a range of I/O and memory controllers. The integrated I/O includes eight 10Gbps Ethernet ports, six PCI Express ports and four DDR3 memory controllers.
Its mPIPE packet processing subsystem offers packet ordering and buffer management. Security protocols, including SSL, IPsec, SRTP, MACsec and 3GPP, are supported with more than 40Gbos of crypto acceleration.
"The TILE-Gx72 processor brings the right mix of compute, low-latency I/O, memory bandwidth, and accelerators for the needs of our intelligent, integrated security appliances," said Ofer Raz, head of platforms and architecture of Check Point Software Technologies. "We continue to be impressed with the scalability of the TILE-Gx family with its seamless software compatibility from 9 cores to 72 cores."
"The TILE-Gx72 rounds out our processor portfolio, complementing our 9, 16 and 36-core TILE-Gx processors and is offering a remarkable range of processing performance," said Devesh Garg, president and CEO of Tilera. "Customers demand ever-increasing levels of performance and performance-per-watt to stay competitive and they simultaneously want to reuse their software and hardware investments across their product portfolio."
The TILE-Gx72 CPU chip is intended as an ideal solution for highly integrated computers for high performance networking, multimedia and cloud storage downloading and uploading.
