Ubuntu For Tablets Unveiled

Ubuntu appears to be well on its way to creating a sleek, functional UI that seems well-suited for business and corporate users, especially in its ability to remotely access Windows applications in PC mode.

Developers will be able to start playing with Ubuntu for tablets on Thursday, Feb. 21, with installable images and source code available from developer.ubuntu.com. But what stands out about Ubuntu's offering is its uniformity across all platforms: You can run the "same Ubuntu" across all platforms, such as desktops, phones and tablets. While the tablet will run Ubuntu normally as a standalone device, if you plug it into a monitor, keyboard and mouse, it gains all the functionality of a full-size computer. When you disconnect, TechCrunch reports, the tablet reverts to its original function.

Right now, developers can install the UI on Nexus devices but the platform itself probably will not see much use unless it can convince hardware manufacturers to adopt it. Canonical says that should not be a problem for smartphone and tablet producers, because Ubuntu for tablets will be easy to enable on any device already running Android, Ars Technica reports.

Ubuntu for tablets will allow applications to run simultaneously in split-screen (and users to drag documents between applications), Canonical's press release brags. Voice control can be used to customize and manipulate its HUD. Navigation between apps, settings and controls will all be adjusted via screen edge, with no need for physical buttons. Multiple users will also be able to work on device, each with their own accounts and fully encrypted data.
