There appear to be two different types of people in the world today, those who know who Kurt Cobain is, and those who don’t.
Kurt Cobain would have turned 46 years old on Wednesday, Feb. 20, and social media users are very aware of the fact.
Millions of people who have held onto Cobain’s legacy as founder and singer for '90s grunge phenomenon Nirvana wished him a happy birthday, bringing “Kurt Cobain” to the top of Twitter’s global trending topics.
But millions of Internet users, particularly among Twitter’s youthful audience, were not even born when Kurt Cobain shot himself in the head, much less when he and his band revolutionized the music industry, and don’t get what the big deal is all about.
These two groups do not like each other.
“This girl wanted to like beat me cause I didn't know who Kurt Cobain was …,” tweeted @caloBRE.
“Who is kurt cobain?” @MyNameIsJen_ asked.
“People who think that kurt cobain was the best thing ever need to give their head a shake,” tweeted @kennefuckyou.
The many Kurt Cobain fans responsible for the trending in the first place took breaks from wishing Kurt a happy birthday to express their frustration with other users' ignorance:
“If you are unaware of who Kurt Cobain is, please unfollow me,” @NearlyRyan tweeted.
“nothing makes me more upset than when people who don't know who Kurt cobain is and they listen to shitty ass music.” @radgal tweeted.
“If you don't know who Kurt Cobain is, the music you listen to is a hammer to you're brain.” @Geekedthefuckup tweeted.
A few posters decided to stay out of the fray, but still joined in the conversation and distanced themselves from all sides.
“Am i the only person who doesn't give a shit about Kurt Cobain? I love weird heroin addict musicians from the 90s, i just never got into him.” @six7six7 posted.
