Republic Wireless' Motorola Defy XT Now Just $99

Republic Wireless has found success in offering unlimited mobile phone service for just $19 a month, and now it's taking things a step further with its Motorola Defy XT plan.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, Feb. 20, Republic Wireless announced it will offer a new service plan for $29 a month when accompanied with the purchase of a Motorola Defy XT smartphone. That might seem like a price increase at first, but the company is reducing the price of the phone itself to $99.

The Defy XT generally retails for $249, so this offer means customers will save around 150 bucks on the phone.

Of course, if you're set on going with the $19 plan, that option will still be available to you, if you're willing to pay full price for the phone.

"Consumers spoke, and we listened. It's that simple," says David Morken, co-founder and president of Bandwith, the parent company of Republic Wireless, in a statement. "People love Republic and the tremendous savings we offer consumers, but the upfront $249 price point for the Motorola Defy XT was cost-prohibitive for some. Today's announcement provides the option for shoppers to save now with a lower price for the phone, or save over time with a lower monthly cost for service."

To sweeten the deal even more, customers who buy the Motorola Defy XT by March 18 will receive $50 in store credit at Google Play for music, games, apps, and pretty much whatever else is available in the store.

"Many of our customers told us they wanted to buy a second line for their spouse, kids or grandparents," adds Morken. "With our new pricing option, that's possible. And for the consumer who wants additional smartphone choices — we are working to bring additional devices to our service later this year. In the meantime, consumers who are in the market for a new smartphone today can start saving now."

Republic Wireless can offer lower-than-average monthly plans because its services use Wi-Fi whenever possible instead of automatically hooking up to a cellular service. If Wi-Fi isn't available, the phone will connect to cellular networks, but the company saves money by prioritizing wireless Internet, and those savings are passed on to the consumers.
