Death By Selfies On The Rise: Why You Should Be Aware Of It

In the internet culture that is shared by millions of people around the world, the term "selfie" is something we are all familiar with. This is something we all do alone or with a group to celebrate an event and to post it with our steady growing obsession of social media sites. But of course, there are some that just do it for no apparent reason - vanity pictures could be the proper term for those kinds of pictures.

Me, Myself and My Killfie

According to a written article at Boston Globe, a group of scholars from Carnegie Mellon University and two other colleges in India conducted a research study about selfie-related deaths, titled: Me, Myself and My Killfie. The purpose of the research is to raise awareness about the dangers of people going to great lengths in the quest for the "coolest selfie." Reportedly, India is on the top list with the highest number of death-related selfies or "killfies" for the last two years with 76 casualties. Coming second place is the U.S. with 8, Russia 6, China 5, Philippines 4, and Spain with only 3 deaths.

However in another article at Rappler, there are said to be a total of 127 confirmed deaths from killfies since March of 2014. In the same research, they concluded that the one solely to blame for these deaths caused by killfies is people's desire for more "likes" and "comments" on social media. Also in the article, it claims that Pakistan is at the second place of the list with 9 selfie-related deaths and China with only 4 selfie-related deaths.

Publish Awareness

Whether U.S. or Pakistan is on the number 2 list and China having 5 or 4 deaths, it doesn't matter. What matter is people should be aware of the dangers of people going to great lengths just to get the coolest selfie for the sake of likes and comments in social networking sites.
