Project Scorpio News: Phil Spencer Describes What A Teraflop For Him Is; How Scorpio Should Be Gauged Against PS4 Pro

Sony has already put their foot forward in the mid-gen console wars and Microsoft is yet to show off their big gun as Project Scorpio's official release date remains to be determined. The best clue we have for now is that Project Scorpio will be released on holidays 2017. Sony only has 4.5 teraflops for their PS4 Pro while Microsft plans to beef up their mid-gen console with 6 teraflops.

Xbox Head, Phil Spencer, was interviewed on how he would describe a teraflop in general. If that can be described, maybe everyone can now gauge how powerful Project Scorpio is compared to the PlayStation 4 Pro. His response? It's pretty vague but Spencer uses an analogy to describe it. He says that it's similar to that of a car, you cannot be sure of its performance if only one distinctive feature is described. He then moved on to an engine's horsepower, which he points out that Teraflop is like that, Stevivor.com reports.

"It's like a car - you wouldn't describe how fast it goes using only one characteristic. But I guess it's like a teraflop is like horsepower - you'd probably have in your head what 100 horsepower could do, or 200." Judging from that statement, it seems that as of today, there is no clear distinction on how a teraflop affects a gaming system's performance.

Spencer also added that it's not just about the teraflops, much like in cars, you also need to consider its transmission, its weight, and so on. So ultimately, teraflops on a gaming console won't be the only determinant of its power, it should work hand in hand with RAM, data transfer speed, and other crucial technicalities that make a game run smoothly.

The imprecise description for teraflops has confirmed that even though Project Scorpio has way more of it compared to the PS4 Pro, it will not ultimately mean that former will always perform better. The performance of each game would ultimately fall on the hands of its developers, so it is better if they know well the system that they are coding on.

If you're now interested on Project Scorpio, make sure you have enough funds for it, as Spencer also drops a bomb on gamers with regards to its price. See the video below for details.
