Instead of seeing the 58-storey Donald Trump's midtown Manhattan home as Trump Tower, it appears to be replaced in Google Maps by a new name as "Dump Tower." Someone renamed the tower on Google Maps on Saturday, and the new moniker was not very flattering. As users of the Google Maps began noticing the new name for the Fifth Avenue building on Saturday, news spread quickly on social media. A lot of speculations, reactions and even pictures spread all over the internet.
Trump Tower Renamed As Dump Tower On Google Maps
According to The Telegraph, Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, has not yet commented on the issue. Trump has been using Trump Tower, which has been the focus of protests after the Republican victory on the election held earlier this month, as his transition headquarters.
Reports are suggesting that the billionaire may buck tradition and eschew the lure of the White House and spend much of his time as president at his $100 million (£80 million) penthouse in New York. While Google managed to put out this first fire, another quickly arose to take its place and later in the day on Saturday, Trump International Hotel & Tower in Columbus Circle was renamed Dump International Hotel & Tower.
Google's Reaction On The Issue
However, Google could not be immediately reached for comment. But after a long wait, a Google spokeswoman told The Associated Press that the company has changed the name back to its original. The spokeswoman said user contributions help provide an up-to-date map, but also occasionally lead to inaccuracies.
As reported by Digital Trends, the vigilant Google Maps team soon corrected the spelling to its original version, and on Saturday evening a Google spokesperson told New York’s PIX11, “Some inappropriate names were surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologize for any offense this may have caused. Our teams immediately took action and have fixed the issue.”
As of now, it is still unclear who was behind the prank made, though some believe that it was an inside job, perpetrated by an employee ofGoogle.
