Samsung Galaxy S3 Named Smartphone Of The Year At Mobile World Congress

To call Samsung's Galaxy S3 a hit would be an understatement: the device has earned Samsung huge honors since it was released in May 2012. Now, the smartphone was hailed as Smartphone of the Year at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Mobile World Congress holds a "Global Mobile Awards" event each year at the conference that many in the tech world consider the Academy Awards of gadgets. In that case, the top Oscar goes to the Samsung Galaxy S3.

It's quite an honor, considering that the smartphone has been on the market since May 2012 and there have been many popular smartphones released since then. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was the first smartphone to unseat Apple's iPhone in consumers' minds as well as the minds of technology enthusiasts. The smartphone topped many lists as the best smartphone available, and it was the first time that Apple's iPhone wasn't in the top spot. The Galaxy S3's popularity is also proven in sales of the device: it has already sold over 40 million units globally.

When the Samsung Galaxy S3 won the Smartphone of the Year award at Mobile World Congress the judge's comments read:

"With its ability to deliver in multiple markets, proven global adoption, and leading edge features such as Pop-up Play, Smart Stay screen and NFC, this is the Android success story."

The fact that Samsung still has what many consider to be the best smartphone on the market with only two weeks before it unveils the Galaxy S3's successor, the Samsung Galaxy S4 should make Apple and other rivals take note. Samsung will almost certainly have an even bigger hit on its hand when it releases the Galaxy S4.

Samsung is believed to have an internal sales goal of 10 million Galaxy S4 smartphones sold per month. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is sure to outsell the Galaxy S3, as each Galaxy S successor has sold more than the previous model. Samsung's goal of selling 10 million Galaxy S4 units per month sounds like a lofty goal at the moment, but if you look back at the history of Samsung's Galaxy S sales numbers, it could easily achieve this high mark. The Samsung Galaxy S2 sold 10 million units globally in five months followed by the Galaxy S3 selling 10 million units in 50 days. 2013 is shaping up to be a very good year for Samsung.
