Chocobos are back and now they are more useful than ever. A staple in the franchise, these huge tame yellow birds can be rented to carry you through the world of Final Fantasy XV. Yes, you have to rent them as you can't own one (as far as we know now). Worry not, however, as you can call them anytime and anywhere (provided you have a ticket!).
How To Rent A Chocobo
Chocobos will not become immediately available to you when you start the game. In fact, you must finish a quest first before you can rent one. Simply bunny hop your way through Final Fantasy XV Chapter 3 as you won't have any companion that will enable you to travel faster for now.
After Chapter 3, go to Wiz' Chocobo Post in Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae. Talk to him and he will give you the side quest called "Friends of a Feather." Upon finishing the mission, talk to him again and he will give you the "A Behemoth Undertaking" hunt.
You will then have to kill Deadeye. Find its lair that has been detailed in the video below by YouTube user TheGamesEntertainer. After you successfully kill it, return to Wiz' Chocobo Outpost.
Afterwards, Chocobo terminals will become available to you. The "Rent-A-Bird" terminals will be marked yellow for easy spotting. To rent one, interact with the machine to purchase a rental ticket. Rental costs 50 Gil a day, so you might want to limit your usage.
You have to input the number of days you want to rent a Chocobo. You can rent one for up to 30 days. Once the duration is up, it will return to Wiz. During rental period, though, you can call it up anytime. It will not stay by your side when you're not using it, but don't worry about it as it can take care of its own. Riding the Chocobo for the first time will also unlock the Trophy "Chocobo Jockey."
More Details About Chocobos
Chocobos are pretty important in Final Fantasy XV. It can take you where your car can't go. Obviously, running (or bunny hopping) is still slower than riding a bird, so if you are not really that pressed for money, consider renting one as much as you can.
You can also take them to camp with you and the gang, where they will also receive buffs. Feed it good quality food to maintain a high Stamina. It can do a variety of stuff, too - like swimming, gliding (jump while riding one) and dashing.
There are also wild Chocobos spotted running about in the wild, which are characterized as having a black color. In the Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae demo, players were not able to interact with them so it is assumed that they cannot be tamed and trained so we won't need to rent one from Wiz anymore.
We still have yet to confirm if we can tame a wild Chocobo. The developers still have to confirm this feature, too. This article will be update as soon as we get fresh new information about the nature of the black ones.
