Boy Dies Days After Bully Attack

A 12-year-old Pennsylvania student who was attacked by bullies passed away on Sunday (March 3) after hospitalization following the attack. Bailey O'Neil was pronounced dead just a day after his birthday, when his family took him off life support Sunday morning.

O'Neil was placed in a medically-induced coma after he was attacked by two classmates in January during school recess. The attack left him with a concussion and a broken nose, and he began experiencing several seizures the next day. He was taken to a hospital in Delaware where doctors induced a coma, but his condition worsened.

As reported by NBC10, O'Neil was given a blood transfusion after he contracted pneumonia, according to his grandmother, Joy Fecanin. Investigators have not said whether or not the students responsible for the attack will be charged.

The two students were suspended from Darby Township School for two days, and O'Neil's death may lead to charges. Authorities are reviewing video of the schoolyard attack and trying to determine if the injuries O'Neil received during the fight caused his death.

"I would like to see these kids punished. Something has to be done. I don't know what's taking them so long," said Fecanin in an interview with NBC10's Katy Zachry. The family pulled Bailey's younger brother out of school out of fear that he may also be attacked.

Counselors were brought into the school on Monday to help the students cope with the tragedy.

"Our school community is deeply saddened by this loss. Our condolences are with Bailey's family and friends during this very difficult time," said Southeast Delco School District Superintendent Stephan Butz in a statement.

"I would like to thank everyone who has prayed and supported Bailey and his family!! Bailey has been the strongest toughest boy I know. He has fought this battle long and hard. There just wasn't a way to fix this. I wish I could say he will get better but I can't. Bailey has gone to be with God today :( I love you Jina Risoldi with all my heart and I will help you through this. Bailey I love you!!! Please keep Baileys family in your prayers!!!" read a message that was posted Sunday on the Building Hope for Bailey Facebook Page.
