It has been confirmed that Carrie Fisher will return to the "Star Wars" franchise with an appearance in 2015's "Episode 7."
Rumors have been buzzing about the new movie to be directed by J. J. Abrams and released in 2015, especially in regard to the cast. We've already known that Harrison Ford will likely reprise his role as Han Solo and we've heard that Mark Hamill is considering returning as Luke Skywalker. Carrie Fisher was said to be floating the idea of returning and has now confirmed it.
When asked in an interview with "Palm Beach Illustrated" if she would return as Leia, Fisher replied, simply, "Yes."
She was then asked what she thought Princess Leia would be like today.
"Elderly. She's in an intergalactic old folks' home," Fisher jokingly replied. "I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle."
Fisher was also asked if Leia would still sport the infamous hair buns.
"The bagel buns and the bikini," Fisher said, "because she probably has sundowners syndrome. At sundown, she thinks that she's 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalized."
Though no other major actors have been confirmed, some memorable figures from the original trilogy have expressed interest.
"I'm like everybody else, we're all speculating and we're all wondering," said Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian, in a radio interview. "If they want me to participate, I'd love to participate. I love the idea of keeping the character alive. And I specifically want to keep him alive, as long as I'm alive."
James Earl Jones, who voiced the character Darth Vader in the original trilogy, also expressed interest in returning, ostensibly for flashback scenes.
"I would love to be part of that," he said, "David Prowse would return in costume and I would do the voice for David."
The "Star Wars" actors aren't the only ones causing sci-fi frenzy lately. In a recent statement to the press, President Barack Obama riled up the nerd community by saying he couldn't perform a "Jedi mind meld" on members of Congress, conflating the well-known terms from "Star Wars" and "Star Trek."
Meanwhile, rumors surrounding the new "Star Wars" film and a string of spin-offs continue. Information on the plot of the film is still being held pretty tightly, though it has been rumored the film will focus on the children of Han and Leia.
Are you glad that Carrie Fisher is coming back as Princess Leia? What do you think "Episode 7" will be about?
