Perovskite Solar Cells Make World Record In Efficiency

Perovskite solar cells are being touted as the next wave in solar cell technology. Already a number of studies and research have been made for perovskite solar cells. Perovskite solar cells have proved to be very efficient, as perovskite solar cells make the world record in efficiency.

Efficiency is one of the most important characteristics needed for solar cells. Perovskite solar cells have been proven to be efficient, based on a number of studies and research. What makes perovskite solar cells to be the next wave in solar cell technology is that it is inexpensive to manufacture. Researchers from the University of New South Wales based in Sydney have made a new record for efficiency in perovskite solar cells.

The team has made a 12.1 percent efficiency rating for a 16 cm2 perovskite solar cell. This is said to be the single largest perovskite photovoltaic cell to have such an efficiency rating. The perovskite solar cell is also ten times bigger than the current holder of an efficient perovskite solar cell, according to Science Daily.

The team of researchers includes Anita Ho-Baillie, a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics (ACAP). The team has been highly successful, since it has also made an 18 percent efficiency rating with a 1.2 cm2 single photovoltaic cell and an 11.5 percent efficiency rating for 16 cm2 four-cell perovskite mini-module. With a consistent output, the team has shown that perovskite solar cells are really efficient.

Ho-Baillie has observed that perovskite solar cells are currently very much studied. It has started in 2009 and since then has taken off. Perovskite has become the material of choice in making the next generation of solar cells since it is easy to produce. It is also inexpensive, which makes it ideal for mass production.

Perovskite isn't without flaw, however. It is prone to moisture and fluctuation, as the UNSW Newsroom reports. Durability is also another factor, as it can only last for a few months if it doesn't have protection. Many teams who are working on perovskite are seeking ways to extend its use. Even with these disadvantages, perovskite solar cells are still the most promising for low cost solar cell technology, and that has become even more attractive as perovskite solar cells make a world record in efficiency. Perovskite solar cells are cheap and are coming soon.
