The Last Guardian has finally arrived after nine years of production. Is the game worth all the hype? Well, we will not talk about that in this article. Rather, we'll focus on your buddy, Trico. The half-bird, half-mammal companion is a little hard to understand and control, so here's a guide on how to be a better friend to this giant.
The Last Guardian Guide: How To Command Trico
First, let's learn the buttons to give Trico commands. You'll basically murder the R1 button in The Last Guardian as all commands use it. Press it and only it to call over Trico (note that it is up to it whether to answer your call or not). The other commands are:
R1 + X to make Trico sit or scold it. R1 + O to make it stand or praise it. R1 + Triangle to ask it to stomp and R1 + Square to ask it to swipe. R1 + directional keys to command it to go in that direction.
The Last Guardian Trico will not follow the command if there's not much space for execution. If that's the case, you will hear it whine.
The Last Guardian Tricks: Understanding Trico
You may find it hard to figure out what's going on inside Trico's head at times... actually, make that most of the times. That's completely normal especially in the early parts of the game. Because our feathered mammal friend doesn't speak, you have to read its body language to determine your next course of action in The Last Guardian.
Trico can make some sounds. It will whine when you are away, which you will have to be sometimes even if you don't want to. It can also call your attention. If it grunts or howls while looking at a particular direction, it means that you have to jump on its back ASAP so it can take you where you need to go.
You can also look in its eyes to understand it better. The eyes can appear in three colors, each indicating a different state. If the eyes are dark green in color, you can rest easy as this means that Trico is in its normal and affectionate state.
If Trico's eyes are colored White or Yellow, it is distracted or mesmerized by something. If it turns pink, start worrying as the bird is in its hostile state. It usually happens when confronted by enemies in The Last Guardian.
The Last Guardian Tips: Taking Care Of Trico
Keep your buddy happy by giving him barrels often. You can throw one right at him or just hold it in front of him so he can proceed to get it from you using its jaws. Do this also if he doesn't answer to your call.
Make sure that you take care of its health. Pull out the spears sticking out from its back so he begins to heal. You can also calm him down after traumatic events by stroking him. Jump on his back and hold O to do this.
That's about everything you need to know about Trico in The Last Guardian. The rest, you'll only find out when you have already formed that special bond with it.
