When Blizzard announced the coming of the 3rd Season of Overwatch Competitive Play, players were wondering what sort of ranking system it'll offer. Although the studio released details about it, it didn't entirely satisfy the community. Of course, fans want to experience it. However, when it arrived, most -- if not all of them -- were frustrated. Some suggest that the way placement matches work is unnerving, while there are those who deem it absurd. In reality, though, it actually works more accurately than now. Here's why.
In one way or another, some players feel like their rankings (after the placement matches) aren't consistent with their performance. There are high-tier players who ranked high last season are now placed at the lowest tier. Heck, there are even Gold and/or Silver players who finished the Bronze rankings. Either way, the idea was the same -- players aren't satisfied with the results.
According to Kotaku, Blizzard has actually been very vocal about it. That this is what's going to happen in the new season of Overwatch Competitive Play. The studio basically wants to improve the way players are distributed in the Skill Tiers (e.g. Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc.). In Season 2, the company iterated that there are far more players allocated in the Gold and Platinum ranking, with Bronze and Silver having few.
Season 2's algorithm also meant that below-average players are likely to rank high up, though their SR doesn't say so. In Season 3, the studio simply wants to make things fair. It's a good thing the devs didn't opt to start everyone from square one. So what's the result? Players, as what's happening now, are starting the new season far from their rankings in the previous season.
This may not be the thing that Overwatch players are hoping to see, but this is exactly what Blizzard wants. The video game company wants the aforementioned mode to feel right and fair for everybody. Besides, if players are really that skillful, climbing the rankings won't be a difficult thing to do.
