GameCube titles will be running on the Nintendo Switch's Virtual Console, according to a rumor that has recently surfaced.
According to Engadget, the rumor was first picked up by Eurogamer which claims it got the bit of information from three different sources.
According to the sources, the support for GameCube games has already been tested and is, in fact, working. There are supposedly three games that are already prepped and running on the Switch. Those games are "Super Mario Sunshine", "Luigi's Mansion", and "Super Smash Bros. Melee". Another game, "Animal Crossing", is also said to be currently being tested.
The games mentioned are some of the most popular titles on GameCube which is most likely the reason why they were the ones tested for the Switch first. Other well-liked GameCube titles include "Kirby Air Ride", "Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes", and "Sonic Adventure 2: Battle".
Nintendo has offered Virtual Console support in some of its previous consoles particularly in Wii, Wii U and 3DS. Users of Virtual Console, a virtual place where retro games are bought and downloaded, have long wanted the VC to offer games from GameCube. Sadly, rumor says that games which were purchased from the VC before will not automatically transfer over to the Switch. To do so, a fee needs to be paid to unlock the ROM on Switch.
Nintendo will be holding an event on January and fans are waiting for an official word from the company regarding the many rumors circling the much-awaited console.
The Switch was finally unveiled last October after being known as Nintendo NX for quite some time. The official release date is yet to be announced but the gaming company did confirm that it will be sometime in March 2017. A rumor surfaced back in November saying the Switch will drop on the March 17 next year. That date falls on a Friday which has traditionally been the day Nintendo releases new products.
