The beloved Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the nostalgia-inducing 8-bit home video game console from the '80s, had a recent resurgence in popularity after Nintendo announced the launch of the console's miniature replica, the NES Classic Edition.
The console has become so coveted that it is now virtually impossible to find, except on eBay, where it is being sold for five times more than the asking price.
NES Classic Edition fans have also been able to grab the consoles from Walmart flash sales and one-off sales events by stores such as Urban Outfitters and Toys R Us. But for those who have been unable to get their hands on the NES Classic Edition, Amazon may be the answer.
On Tuesday, Dec. 6, the online retail giant hinted at an upcoming NES Classic Edition sale. The announcement was addressed to NES Classic fans, raising peoples' hopes that they might still have a chance to purchase the in-demand console before the holidays. "NES Classic fans: we've got a couple exciting announcements to make in the coming week," read the post by the official Twitter account of Amazon Video Games. "Stay tuned for more info soon!"
BGR notes that while the Twitter post was incredibly vague, it may be taken to mean that the online retailer could be gearing up for a Lightning sale, and that the NES Classic Edition could be one of the items on offer. The outlet suggests that the sale event could be held exclusively for Amazon Prime members, which would both (1) get more customers to sign up for the VIP program, and (2) keep off the scalpers. However, there is also a possibility that the sale could be not for the old-school video game console itself, but for NES Classic Edition cases and other accessories.
According to Thrillist, when it reached out to Amazon for comment on the NES Classic Edition announcement, a spokesperson for the retailer replied with: "We have nothing more to share beyond that tweet. Stay tuned!" Fans of the sought-after video game console will indeed be on the lookout for the Amazon sales event, as many are already anticipating that stocks of the NES Classic Edition will be limited. BGR reports that based on customers' emails, Walmart is currently unable to fulfill the NES Classic Edition orders from its sale a couple of weeks ago.
