The Last of Us 2 announcement and trailer released on PlayStation Experience 2016 are some of the highlights of the event. The teaser, however, poses questions we're all dying to find the answer for. Even so, does it contain answers? Here are the theories and clues that the trailer might have given us.
Why The Hate, Ellie?
It has already been established that The Last of Us 2 will be driven by hate as opposed to the previous installment that showcased the love between Ellie and Joel. This time, the sequel will focus more on the female protagonist, who we have witnessed in the trailer to be full of hate.
There are a dozen speculations about what is driving Ellie to revenge, but there are only a handful that seem likely. The most popular theory is that Joel is dead and she is out to seek vengeance on the people that caused his death. What we saw in the trailer is merely an apparition or the girl's hallucination. His entrance by seemingly coming out of thin air doesn't help and neither does his hidden face.
There are other clues in The Last of Us 2 trailer that point to this conclusion. We see Ellie bathed in blood, presumably of the ones she just killed outside the room, while playing the guitar. Joel, on the other hand, looks suspiciously clean. The revolver in his hand doesn't seem used either. Did he leave the girl in a dangerous situation? Or was he not in the condition to help her (read: dead)?
Ellie Might Have Been A Mother
Ellie is something special. She's immune to the fungal spores. At the end of The Last of Us (spoiler), she would have died by undergoing an operation that would supposedly save mankind. Thankfully, Joel saves her instead of leaving her in the Fireflies lab.
We also know that there are others like Ellie, but unlike her, they died in the operation room for naught. Reverse engineering a vaccine never became successful. So what if Fireflies tried something different before the events of The Last of Us 2? Say, experimenting if she would pass on her immunity to her child?
This is not out of the realm of possibility for Fireflies, but how exactly did fans come to this theory? Well, it all started with the Uncharted 4 Easter Egg. In the game, players found a poster explicitly indicating "The Last of Us: American Daughters." Then there's a pregnant woman wearing a gas mask and holding a revolver.
Is this Ellie? Or Is Naughty Dog just being naughty? It would make sense, although morbid, that she would go on a mission to hunt down people if Ellie was impregnated then had her baby taken away from her. The tattoo on her right arm, which consists of leaves and a butterfly, also screams "new life."
With so little details presented to us, it's hard to come up with a more plausible theory. More so, Naughty Dog hasn't always been truthful in their trailers. The devs might just be messing up with our brains again. How about you? What do you think of The Last of Us 2 trailer?
