Fat Protein Silencing Helps To Reduce Obesity And Improve Blood Sugar

Many still have health concern over fat. The word itself has become associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. There might be hope for those who have health concerns, as fat protein silenced helps to reduce obesity and improve blood sugar.

Trying to slim down can be a challenge for obese people. There are ways that can be done to reduce weight, though it would involve invasive surgery. A less invasive way is being searched to reduce obesity. A researcher from Saint Louis University may have found way to do that. Angel Baldan, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He has found a way to turn off a fat protein that can be found in the liver.

Baldan has found that cells in the liver have lipid droplets. The lipid droplets have triglycerides and are said to be coated by protein. One of those protein has been identified as fat-specific protein 27 or FSP27. What this protein does is to prevent lipid from mobilizing and helps to store lipids in the cell.

In normal liver, the protein is not present. However, in fatty liver, the protein is there. Baldan has observed that obesity and fatty liver go together. Fatty liver can cause chronic fatty disease, according to the Saint Louis University's site.

Baldan used mice as test subjects for the research. The mice are divided into two groups. Both groups are obese and have high blood sugar and fatty liver disease. One group of mice is on a high fat diet, while the other group has been genetically modified to have that same trait. The mice then were treated with or without antisense oligonucleotides. The antisense oligonucleotides can silence the fat protein, as Science Daily reports.

With FSP27 silenced, it has been found that visceral fat has been decreased. Insulin sensitivity has also been achieved and glycemic index has been controlled. Baldan has found that reducing FSP27 is beneficial in treating obesity. Even mice on a high fat diet did not have fatty liver.

As the battle against obesity continues, researchers are looking for ways to find a non-invasive treatment for it. Fat protein silenced helps to reduce obesity and improve blood sugar, which might have much promise against fat. In another research, it has been found that morning people do not perform well at night.
