'Twin Peaks' Season 3 (2017) Updates: New Teaser Shows David Lynch As FBI Chief; What To Expect From The Upcoming Sequel

Showtime released a teaser of the much-anticipated "Twin Peaks" season 3 on Sunday, Dec. 18, featuring David Lynch as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole. There is no exact premiere date yet for the 2017 sequel but fans are eager to see more of the series. Meanwhile, the cast members teased what we can expect from the psychological thriller series.

'Twin Peaks' (1990)

Set in a fictional, eerie town called Twin Peaks, the series follows a group of FBI investigators headed by Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan). As the series progressed it revealed the dark side of the seemingly innocent characters who are found to be living double lives. It has both the melodramatic portrayal of characters in soap operas and the supernatural and unsettling atmosphere in most horror series.

"Twin Peaks" is often considered as the greatest television series ever made, especially due to its cinematography. Previously, it was reported that the Duffer Brothers got an inspiration from the series for the hit Netflix show, "Stranger Things." Its second season also had a crossover soundtrack with "Twin Peaks."

'Twin Peaks' Season 3

The sequel will be set 25 years after the events in the original series, which aired from April 1990 to July 1991. In the book titled, "The Secret History of Twin Peaks," we were given some clues on how the story will play. Years after Dale Cooper's investigation of Laura Palmer's death, the FBI will discover a box of clues about the case and will task a female FBI agent to analyze it.

She will also investigate about the person who compiled the clues, written reports from Dale Cooper who has vanished after the incident, autopsy reports and more. Along the way, she will discover the strange secrets of the town.

"Twin Peaks" season 3 has an ensemble of 217 cast members, 36 of whom are returning cast including Kyle MacLachlan as Dale Cooper, Madchen Amick as Shelly Johnson, Dana Ashbrook as Bobby Briggs, Richard Beymer as Benjamin Horne, James Marshall as James Hurley, Sherilyn Fenn as Audrey Horne, Sheryl Lee as Laura Palmer and more.

Showtime also released a teaser of "Twin Peaks" season 3 with David Lynch munching donuts as he gets into the role as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole. He is now using a more advanced hearing aid instead of the wired from the original series. Meanwhile, notable additions to the show include Robert Knepper, Jane Levy, Ashley Judd, Jim Belushi, Michael Cera, Jessica Szohr, Trent Reznor and Richard Chamberlain.

"We'll be visiting all these new territories, there's a freshness to it there's a lightness to it," MacLachlan said in a teaser video. James Marshall described that the upcoming sequel is very dynamic. "[It] has a lot of facets ... In my opinion, it discovers in a poetic way the whole human experience," he said. Robert Knepper, on the other hand, teased that there are a lot of surprises for "Twin Peaks" season 3.

"Twin Peaks" season 3 will air in the first half of 2017. There is no information about the number of the episodes yet but some cast members revealed we can expect 18 episodes or more.
