Chicken Lays Giant Egg Containing Second Egg (Video)

A freakishly gigantic egg has been laid in Southwest China and is catching worldwide attention both for its size and for its contents.

The freak egg, which was measured at three times the size of a "normal" egg, also contained another egg inside of it.

The massive egg was clocked in as weighing "almost half a pound," the Independent says. It was discovered by the inhabitants of the village in which it was laid, Guizhou.

During what the Independent refers to as "the ceremonial cracking," the villagers broke the monster egg's shell to discover two yolks and an extra egg inside.

"What's this? Another egg! Freaky!" The Independent reported in its video chronicling the villagers' strange discovery. The second egg was broken thereafter, and yet another yolk discovered inside.

This makes the monster egg a three-yolker.

The 87-year-old woman who owns the (normal-looking) chicken that laid the monster egg points out to The Independent in its video that the chicken has laid other monster eggs recently and will likely lay more in the future to come. She confesses in the video that she's "never seen anything like it before."

The woman thought that the hen was dying while she watched it struggle to lay its first monster egg.

How does a relatively normal-seeming chicken end up laying a monster egg with three yolks? The woman claims it's all about diet. The hen has been on a rice diet after refusing the corn the other chickens were eating.

Previously, the Guinness Book Of World Records determined an egg weighing in at 5.4 ounces and measuring 3 1/2 inches long was the largest chicken egg in the world. The egg was laid on a farm in Yell County, Ark. and the folks at Guinness — who created the new World's Largest Chicken Egg category for the event — have continued to seek eggs that may be larger.

Since the Chinese monster egg weighs nearly twice as much as its Arkansas predecessor, it looks like Guinness has found a winner.
