Advertisements show the best aspects of products. They entice people to buy the products by showing its positive traits. However, crib advertisements show unsafe environment for babies, as a study explains.
Advertisements in magazines of infant cribs show something that might negate its selling points. According to a study made by researchers from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, unsafe sleeping environments are being shown despite guidelines set for them. The guidelines have been given out by American Academy of Pediatrics after a rise in SIDS and other infant sleep-related disorders.
Parents and caregivers should be educated on how to properly give their children a safe sleeping environment. This has been stated by Bradley Troxler, M.D. He is an assistant professor and director of the University of Alabama Pediatric Pulmonary Center. He added that advertisers and promoters should be examples on how to observe the guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Though there has been an improvement in crib advertisements, the study has found that still 40 percent of current advertisements that have failed to follow the standards that have been set for advertising such products. Some of the advertisements have been found to feature things that might contribute to sudden infant death syndrome, such as soft bedding and bumper pads. The study has looked into 1,758 crib advertisements and 1,893 print ad advertisements.
The study encouraged advertisers and promoters to work with parents and caregivers in promoting a safe sleeping environment for babies, according to the UAB School of Medicine's site. This would be to prevent SIDS and other sleep-related disorders that can affect babies. A number of babies are affected even if attended because their sleeping conditions encourage infant sleeping disorders.
As a guideline, the American Academy of Pediatrics has listed some recommendations, as Science Daily reports. These recommendations having a sleeping area separate from where the parents sleep. A crib is often recommended as the best for babies. Extra beddings and paddings are not recommended as well; instead, a fitted sheet is more advisable. Any toys and stuffed animals should also be taken out of the crib when the baby sleeps.
A safe sleeping environment for babies won't give parents too many worries. The study has shown that crib advertisements show unsafe environment for babies. Researchers have also found that silencing fat protein can help lessen obesity.
