According to a recent report, Super Mario Run reaches 50 million downloads as of today. But despite this achievement, mobile users of the said game still labeled it as an "annoying game."
Super Mario Run Is An 'Annoying' Game For Some Mobile Users
Super Mario Run is a side-scrolling auto-running video game developed and published by Nintendo. It was released on iOS on December 15, 2016, and will be released for Android in 2017. On its first day, nearly three million downloads are recorded. Until then, the game has received mixed reviews and two of the most prevalent complaint was about its price and data usage.
Annoying Data Usage
According to BGR, the game would require an always-on internet connection to play, for some reason. In a per hour of gameplay, it eats up a range of 40 to 70 MB, depending on your exactly gameplay style and mode. With that, it can really bad things on your data plan especially if you are playing a couple hours in a day using your cellular data.
Believe it or not, 70 MB an hour doesn’t sound like much. But what if you are hooked to playing the Super Mario Run and cannot just leave Mario looking to the bad creatures around him and do nothing. "You’ll burn through nearly 1.5GB a month, and if you’re on a cheaper data plan, that could account for all your 4G data allowance for the month, just from one non-multiplayer game."
AppleInsider quotes sources who say that part of the reason behind the high huge data usage of the SuperMario Run is the abnormally high server load during the launch period. It is causing some of Nintendo's servers to work inefficiently and eat more data than they should. The situation isn’t ideal for Nintendo, but data usage probably won’t be as much of a long-term problem as it has been for Pokemon Go players.
After all, this mobile data usage issue on Super Mario Run has been brought up, still, the game receives high critics. And because of that, the company is giving away promos for all the gamers. "To show our gratitude to everyone who's downloaded [Super Mario Run], we are giving you all 10 Rally Tickets for free," reads a message delivered to players through Super Mario Run's in-game notification system. "Use them to enjoy all the fun of the Toad Rally. "
Annoying Price
According to GameSpot, Super Mario Run is free to download, but only for a limited selection of levels are playable until you purchase it for £8 or $10. Nintendo has not released information on how many players have spent money on Super Mario Run until now. And there is still no announcement when they will release that kind of information.
"The problem is not that they expect you to pay past a demo," reads a review from iOS user Tammi. "The problem is the price they're charging. For a game with little content, entirely recycled assets except for a few animations, and grind-heavy gameplay, $10 is exorbitant."
Another review from iOS user awesome32907, is telling that Super Mario Run is "too overpriced. Definitely not worth $10. Don't get me wrong - the gameplay and design are great, but $10? Seriously?"
Super Mario Run is doing OK financially even with the negative user reviews. According to intelligence firm Sensor Tower, it is the fastest iOS app ever to 50 million downloads and it has generated more than $21 million in spending.
So, for now, as per Venture Beat, Nintendo doesn’t need to listen to all of the complaints of the gamers. It’s likely that the people who don’t want to spend $10 on its game probably also wouldn’t spend $5 or even $1. And the game is doing fine without their money.
