A new device has surfaced from Sharp with the mysterious codename FIH-VKY.
Details on the device, culled from GLBenchmark's records, don't reveal much other than a 1794 x 1080 display. There will be an Adreno 320 GPU along with Android 4.2.1. Though the processor is not mentioned, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 wouldn't be surprising, given the GPU selection.
There is no mention of screen size, but given that previous Android-powered smartphones already have five-inch screens, Sharp may go with something bigger to compete with devices like the LG Optimus G Pro, Galaxy Note 2, ZTE Grand Memo and Huawei Ascend Mate.
Based on the Benchmark record, it appears that Sharp's new device should perform faster than the company's Aquos SH930W as well as the HTC J Butterfly.
HTC unveiled its J Butterfly phone in Japan back in October, following much speculation. The device's "Super LCD 3" screen was particularly appealing, displaying an incredible 440 ppi, which made the display the clearest ever on a smartphone. The phone was 9.1 mm thick and contained a quad core Snapdragon S4 with 2GB of RAM. It also had an eight-megapixel camera and a 2,020mAh battery.
Not long thereafter, Sharp announced the Aquos SH930W in Hong Kong. The phone featured a Full HD 5-inch display at 443 ppi, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 2GB of RAM. Like the Butterfly, it also had an eight-megapixel camera and 2100mAh battery.
But unlike the HTC J Butterfly, Sharp's Aquos SH930W never really took off. The details surrounding the new device seem to indicate that Sharp is trying to make a comeback of sorts by introducing a more sumptuous Full HD device. It's still too early to know if Sharp's strategy will work, but it's safe to say that smartphone enthusiasts could be in store for another great phone not too long from now.
