Lo and behold, someone has taken the idea of #ThrowbackThursday to a whole new level. There are numerous photo-sharing apps on the market, but the newest, for Apple iOS, is called called ThrowBack and lets you send pictures into the future.
ThrowBack is a free app and its premise is simple: You snap a photo and send it to yourself or a group of friends at some point in the future. The app blocks you from seeing the photo any sooner than a month ahead and you will receive the picture, via email attachment, at the time you specify.
Founder Calli Higgins calls ThrowBack app concept as something that she arrived at "out of an exploration between photography and nostalgia," Techcrunch reports.
"After researching why certain images pang us while others don't, I realized nostalgia is conjured by revisiting something you haven't seen in a while," she told TechCrunch. "ThrowBack is an alternative to the current overexposure of our images and the numbness this can create."
Once you've registered an email address, you are given the option to take a new picture or choose one from your photo album. You then select a date, a general range of time (from six months to five years) or click "Surprise."
Much to our chagrin, the ThrowBack app doesn't integrate with any social networks, so you can forget about setting up for your weekly Throwback Thursday (how cool would that be?)
The app is still being developed, so new features are likely to emerge, although Higgins hasn't disclosed them.
ThrowBack is another app that seeks to reel in users enamored with Instagram, which will soon be integrated with a Polaroid camera. As Techcrunch points out, Snapchat is leading the "selfie" messaging phenomenon, while Vine, owned by Twitter, is a leader among GIF-creating apps that include Viddy, SocialCam and Cinemagraph.
