Xbox Head Phil Spencer has recently admitted that he is unsure whether or not the Xbox One is capable of beating the PlayStation 4 in the coming years when it comes to overall profits. The PS4 is currently atop every other console in terms of popularity and overall sales, and will likely continue on dominating even through next year, according to several analysts.
PS4 still dominates the console industry
During a live interview at the 2015 GeekWire Summit, Phil Spencer claims that he is not entirely certain that Microsoft can close in on Sony's significantly huge lead with its PlayStation 4, due largely in part to the Xbox One's mediocre launch. When Spencer was asked whether or not Xbox One sales will be able to surpass the PlayStation 4's, he had this to say:
"You know, I really don't know. The length of the generation, they [Sony] have this huge lead because they have a good product. I love the content, the games line-up that we have."
The Problem with the Xbox One
When looking at why the Xbox One still has a lot of development to do in order to catch up with the PlayStation 4, Spencer suggested that it might be due to the hit in morale that his company's workers suffered from their superiors, and the scrutiny of unfair public perception as well.
Of course, Spencer obviously will not completely count the Xbox One console out of the picture. The executive went on to use the feature of the Xbox One's backward compatibility component as an example of what Microsoft is doing correctly in order to tend towards the gaming community at large.
By using the said feature as a reference, it's pretty clear that Spencer's business philosophy focuses on garnering the support of consumers, instead of trying to directly fight with the competition. To emphasize more on this point, he said:
"I would never doubt the ability of our organization, but I will say we are not motivated by beating Sony. Instead, we are motivated by gaining as many customers as we could possibly can."
Challenges for Microsoft's console
Microsoft definitely has a lot of challenges ahead of itself. For instance, Japan sales for the Xbox One are really bad, as the console is currently being outsold 108-to-1 by the PlayStation 4. Sony's console is also dominating as far as earnings go.
According to reports, the PlayStation 4 sales are currently standing at 25.4 million on total units sold, while the Xbox One is at a dismal 13.9 million sold. To top it off, Microsoft is still trying to regain the trust of its fan base after its Xbox Live went down just last week, much to the frustration of Xbox One owners everywhere.
The PS4 is (as of now) unbeatable
With all things being said, it's no doubt that the PlayStation 4 is dominating the gaming consoles industry thus far. Sony's commanding lead over Microsoft and all of its rivals just prove that, as of now, the PlayStation 4 is unbeatable and will continue to profit as time passes by, or until Microsoft figures out a way to outduel Sony.
